Dancing on Air
Suzy Kenney, FAIS Artist in Residence
Since the inception of its aerial dance program six years ago to this year’s debut of an all youth aerial company performance, this is a very exciting time for Pendulum and the community which has made it all possible.
In spring of 2005, Artistic Director Suzanne Kenney, recognizing the progress and potential of certain aspiring aerialists of Pendulum’s youth programs at FAIS, founded a pre-professional youth performing company, "The Pendulum Flyers". A great aspect of their aerial training, as in any artistic discipline, is creation and the sharing of creation through performance. The company is comprised of Gilkey students and Gilkey alumni. Since its beginning, the company has created quite a buzz in the Portland community, having performed for the “Young Audience Gala” in February and having been featured in The Oregonian’s “Plugged in”.
DANCING ON AIR will feature members of the newly founded “Pendulum Flyers”, a group of students who have studied the aerial arts for a minimum of three years. The Flyers were chosen based on their dedication shown during training, physical and artistic ability, and personal desire for this artistic discipline. Also performing will be apprentices and students from the Pendulum programs.
The concept of this year's program, “Celebrating Youth”, will artistically convey aspects so definitive of youth in our culture, which include innovation, energy, exploration, and the beautifully impossible becoming possible– in this case through flight. The students will perform highly skilled aerial dances using hand loops, fabric, hoop, rope, hammocks, trapeze, invented apparatus, dance, and gymnastics.
The show will feature choreography by Suzanne Kenney, Nicole Pearson, Andrew Adams, Erika Gilfether, Laura Stokes and the Pendulum Flyers. All performances will take place at the French American International School on May 20th and 21st. Tickets can be purchased from the Front Office.
