Position: Head Educational Coach

Job Description: The head educational coach is in charge of implementing the general curriculum for the pre-professional youth company (Flyers), and serves as the primary coach for the Flyers program. In addition, the head education coach serves as a core performing artist in private, corporate and public event performances for Pendulum. We are specifically looking for a coach to lead the Flyers in preparation for a May 2008 encore presentation of their show “Dawn: A New Beginning.”

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Following an appropriate course of instruction for various student level
  • Monitoring and maintaining the overall safety and discipline of students
  • Providing assignments for assistant coaches and monitoring quality of instruction
  • Teaching and verifying safe spotting and instruction techniques to assistant coaches
  • Teaching aerial/other class work to students
  • Assisting with choreographing work for in preparation for presentations or performances
  • Maintaining standards for physical conditioning and flexibility training of youth company members
  • Performing in various private and public events for Pendulum

Additionally, the head education coach serves as both a role model for students and other teachers, and as a company representative when interacting with clients and the public audience. Therefore the applicant should display the following personal characteristics:

  • Cheerful and professional demeanor
  • Positive and constructive in giving/receiving corrections or criticism
  • Artistically creative and open

Job Requirements: Applicants should have a minimum of two years of combined teaching and/or performing experience in aerial work. The ideal candidate has a broad working knowledge of a wide range of aerial disciplines, with an emphasis on clean technique, appropriate skills progression, and artistic development. Aerial disciplines taught at Pendulum include: aerial silks, hammock, rope, hoop (lyra), straps, static trapeze, dance trapeze, and doubles work.

Relevant experience in ground performance is also strongly preferred, in one or more of the following disciplines: Dance, adagio, contortion, handbalancing, tumbling, juggling, hula-hoop, stilt-walking, etc. Familiarity with aerial rigging is also a plus.

Pendulum Dance Theatre is now accepting promotional material from performing artists interested in performing in a cabaret this fall in Portland, OR!
The title of the show is “Backstage!” Artists will be working in character to create this cabaret-style performance, utilizing the behind-the-scenes hijinks and rivalries that might occur in the context of a show as a backstory to what happens in the spotlight. The show will be presented three nights, October 25-27.
Representatives from Teatro Zinzanni and other selected venues will also be coming to evaluate selected artists' acts and their ability to work within the cabaret format.* The ability to generate live audience enthusiasm and tell a story in your work makes all the difference – this performance gives you the opportunity to demonstrate that you have the skills!
Performance slots are via invitation only. All genres of performance will be considered: circus acts, singers, dancers, pet acts, etc. Please carefully read the requirements below:

  • Acts performed must be between 6-8 minutes long
  • Performances must be geared to work within a pre-1950s theme: music, costuming, etc.
  • Performers must be ready to work in character (assigned or pre-determined by your act) and to contribute as general cast members in act transitions, backstage rigging, etc.
  • Performers must be available for all rehearsal and show dates between October 21- 27, 2008

Artists will be paid a small stipend; some housing is available on a first-come, first-serve basis. There is also the possibility of paid coaching workshops for children from October 27-31, and housing will be made available for all workshop guest artists. If you are interested in teaching workshops as well as auditioning, please note this on your application.
