"Pendulum's show has a lots of Heart"

While "Delirium" was bottoming out at the Rose Garden, Portland's homegrown, Cirque inspired Pendulum Aerial Dance Theatre on Friday opened its two night "Crimson Cabaret" in the atrium of Northwest Portland's Montgomery park. This company has a long way to go to match the polish and gee-whiz factor of its Canadian counterpart, but this performance showed plenty of heart and featured several routines which were anything but grounded.
Led by artistic director Suzanne Kenney, the company offered short bursts of limber mid-air entanglements between dancers and colorful swaths of fabric. Standing out was Andrew Adams, a gymnast with a comic sensibility who proved both an adept juggler and a romantic presence in two acts performed with dancer Erika Gilfether.
The show, which featured dinner served during the performance pauses, needed a smoother flow, and much of it's comedy seemed forced. But the earnestness on display was refreshing, particularly in contrast to "Delirium's" calculated coldness.
